Convenio between PIARA and UNASAM Signed
We are happy to report that on May 18th, the "convenio" or official relationship between PIARA and the Departamento de Arqueología of the Universidad Nacional de Ancash - Santiago Antunez de Mayolo (UNASAM)was formalized and signed by the chancellor of UNASAM, Dr. Fernando Castillo Picón and Rebecca Bria.  In this convenio, the Department of Archaeology at UNASAM will offer a field methods course and university credit hours to those participating in the PIARA field school, and PIARA director Rebecca Bria will hold a visiting instructor position in the Department of Archaeology and teach the field methods course.  As part of this convenio, UNASAM archaeology students in their 4th and 5th year of study are invited to do their field practicums with PIARA, and the tuition paid by the field school students for their credit hours will go towards necessary equipment and supplies for the UNASAM archaeology department, beginning in 2011 with a Nikon total station. UNASAM students can use this machine to carry out independent and group mapping and research projects under faculty direction, in the hopes of providing students more research and practical experience before they continue their careers as professional archaeologists after graduation.  Both parties of the convenio are very excited about the future of this arrangement, and are happy to provide opportunities for intercultural exchange in an academic setting between the Peruvian students of Ancash and the international students registered for the PIARA field school.
